Search engine optimization dominates the thinking and to a large degree the marketing efforts of many small and medium-sized companies, but have you ever noticed that many of the largest and most profitable companies in the world ignore many SEO techniques.

Of course these companies have large advertising and marketing budgets that drive traffic to their websites and generate leads, sales, and most importantly customers; and they achieve these results without having to twist their Web-marketing message out of shape in order to satisfy search engine criteria.

Their prime interest is in delivering their finely crafted, focused marketing message to their audience, not to search robots. Last I heard search engines are in the business of selling you their stuff not buying yours. But these companies also know something that you don't; they have a secret that makes their marketing work without the need for search engine appeasement. This secret is not much of a secret, in fact it is out there for all see; unfortunately most search engine crazed entrepreneurs choose to ignore it and instead look for an easy fix, a magic bullet, search engine nirvana.

Google's Mission

Google's success is based on two very simple facts: one, it is the best way to find what people are looking for on the Web; and two, it has parlayed this ability into a series of paid-for services. Pretty obvious stuff until you delve deeper into why and how this works. Google understands the same thing most extraordinarily successful companies understand and that is they know what you really want. The keyword here is 'really:' they understand the unconscious primal need to survive, to be the alpha-ape, to be first on page one of a search for whatever it is you do, because in the SEO game, if you ain't on the leader board you ain't in the money.

And the game continues, bringing in huge profits to Google and wonderfully large fees to the search engine optimization experts, leaving you paying the shot with little to show for it.

Just as an aside, I can tell you that most of our website traffic and subsequent inquiries and worldwide clients come from Google searches, and our website is mostly Flash, concentrates on Web-video and audio, and basically ignores most search optimization tricks. We rely on providing our audience and Google with relevant material.

The lesson here is clear: sound marketing practices based on the way people think and act should be your number one priority, not blind faith in the manipulation of some constantly changing mathematical formula that is increasingly playing second fiddle to paid-for placement.

The Key to Doing Keyword Research

As any Search Engine Optimization expert will tell you, Keyword research is a funny animal. The type of keyword research you do will vary, depending on what you're using the keywords for. Article research, for example, will be much different than keyword searches done for web sites mostly because people are searching for different types of words depending on what they're going after. Regardless of the type of search you're doing though, there are some hard and fast rules when it comes to good keyword searches. Here are some tips that should help you understand, define, and implement your own keyword searches:

1) Study the marketplace: Your market will tell you a lot about which keywords are popular and which aren't. The tools I describe later in this article shouldn't replace your own research. Get to know your competition by studying their marketing materials, press releases and web sites. Often you'll find hidden data in these places that will help you narrow down your own search. By "hidden data" I don't mean data that is literally hidden like back-end text in web site development no one ever sees, what I mean by this is terminology that might not seem like a keyword or keyword string initially, but as you dig deeper you find that it's in fact a popular search term.

2) Keywords are just that: words. They can be single words or keyword strings. Either way you'll want to find the perfect term for you. Don't get hung up on finding the single perfect word, instead look for search terms or patterns.

3) Keywords won't stay evergreen: As markets/readers change, so might your keywords. If you have a keyword or keyword string that's been working well for you that's great, but when it stops producing results (i.e. hits to your web site, hits to your articles, or inquiries about your book) then you might be in need of a new set of words.

4) Research: If you're stumped for how to research keywords and the marketing materials and press releases you've gathered aren't helping, consider going onto some blogs in your particular market and see what you can dig up there. Look for phrases that are used over and over again. For example when women's literature added a spicy, fun new genre, the term "chick lit" was used over and over and became not just the adopted name for the genre, but a keyword term as well.

5) Use keyword sites to augment your searches: Along with studying the marketplace you can also go online and use the websites recommended below to help you further your search. Many of these sites are free but if keywords are crucial to your campaign, you might want to think about finding a site you like and paying for their upgraded research.

6) Test, test, test. Once you have identified a keyword or string of keywords, test these words by creating articles or press releases using these terms. You'll be able to see quickly how well your words are working.

7) Use them everywhere: Once you have identified words that work for you, use them everywhere. As I explained above you can use them in your articles, press releases, even on your web site. You can even use them in your social networking profile, on your page or as the name for your social networking page (this works especially well if you're using Squidoo).

Killer Keyword Marketing Research

Everyone wants more traffic. But most do not know how to excel at the one thing that will insure their site is jammed with traffic like a Los Angeles freeway at rush hour. That is, they fail to do anywhere near enough keyword marketing research.

Granted reading one article will not you an expert make. But I can at least begin to bring you up to speed when it comes to finding visitor laden top search terms. To do so I will reveal four of my sacred keyword research rules of thumb.

My first rule of thumb is simple. Do not settle for the obvious keyword phrases. I know. Sounds obvious. But apparently isn't.

For example the term "easter baskets" gets 120 searches/day. While going up against 420,00 other pages.

Not insurmountable. But I like less of a challenge. Especially when "personalized easter baskets" gets 109 searches/day and only has 615 competitors.

See the difference one word makes? Similar to the difference between lightning and a lightning bug, no? Since you get nearly the same number of searches with no where near the same number of competing pages.

The next secret rule of thumb is to compare the plural verses singular forms to see which is better. Since when it comes to this most webmasters tend to pile onto the wrong choice.

Take the term "gold earrings" It gets 168 daily searches in all engines, and has 1,540,000 competing pages in Google. While "gold earring" gets 84 daily searches and faces 440,000 competitors. In other words it has less than a third of the competition for half the searches. So we're on the right track. Best of all "italian gold earrings" is used by 52 searchers daily. And only has to fend off 514 pesky competitors. Or what you might call a slam dunk.

Your third keyword research tactic involves grabbing the low hanging fruit. Or what I call "orphan keywords".

Ideally you're looking search terms with less than 1000 competing pages in Google when searching for the EXACT phrase. 500 or less is better still.

Of course the closer to 10 competing pages you get for a search term, the more likely it is your page will be to stumble into the top 10. These are true "orphan keywords". So named due to neglect by your competitors.

Then don't forget to think outside the box. Just like your potential customers do.

Say you had a law practice in California. One term you might consider is "criminal defense attorney". That gets 131 searches but faces 1,450,000 competing pages. I'm not wild about those odds. Plus the term really isn't very targeted.

Digging deeper I found that "criminal defense attorney LA" gets 85 daily searches. And only has 11,1100 pages to beat out. Not bad.

Digging deeper still "criminal defense attorney la county" gets 84 daily searches. But only has 575 competing pages. Paydirt!

Once again I turned up a search term with total searches at least in the same ball park as the generic term I started with. Yet with just a handful of competing pages to deal with. Rarely do I fail to do this. In fact you'll discover dozens of such gems by thoroughly researching your keyword universe.

Never forget that keyword marketing research is THE factor that determines the success or failure of your niche site. Applying rules of thumb like these can help you do smarter optimised keyword marketing. Which in turn will help you attract more traffic from search engines more easily. And traffic is something we could all use more of, right?
